Are there any clothing taboos in Japan?

My husband and I are taking our grandaughter to Japan in May; and I want to know if the Japanese people are offended by Americans wearing shorts in public or tank-type tops etc? Thanks for any and all suggestions that would make our trip easier, more enjoyable, and more interesting - places to go, foods to eat, how much rain should we plan on in mid-May?
