Italy in November

Postby soogale » Wed Jun 08, 2005 7:45 am

My husband and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary by taking a trip to Italy in November (Globus, Italy at Leisure). . It will be our first trip to Europe! What weather should we expect to pack for?

Any packing hints? Thanks. Susan

Packing

We too are doing Italy next year. We've been to Europe a few times and a few packing hints.. .. .
1) You can't pack too light. Because you are going from place to place, might I recommend one suitcase per person
2) Be sure you have luggage with wheels
3) MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A MONEYBELT!!! This protects your passport, money, credit cards etc. You will feel ease in crowds, and won't have to worry about pickpockets (We never experienced any problems, and enjoyed every trip)

Enjoy your trip. You'll have a blast!!! :D

Pack as you would if you were going to Michigan that time of year. Italy can be fairly cool then, especially Venice which also can be quite windy.
I would only add if you are not comfortable wearing a money belt and have never worn one before, get used to it first. I live in Europpe and have traveled all over and have never been pickpocketed. Don't carry a lot of cash and just be careful. If anyone asks you if you speak English, say No and keep walking. They often have no accent and look innocent enough, but these are gypsies and will try to distact you anyway they can to set you up. Take a cheap umbrella too - the small pop up kind.
Have fun - you will love Italy and the people.

L.L. Beans sells a nifty nylon security pouch for $10 that has room for passport, credit card, and euros. It attaches by two loops to your own belt and you tuck it down the front of your trousers. My wife used the pouch with the neck lanyard and we had no problems. Just be vigilant in crowds. Pack one suitcase per person plus SMALL carry-on, you'll be glad you don't have more. You'll love Italy, especially Venice!

Well, a money belt in cold weather should not be a bother. However, there were free safes in all the hotel rooms on our recent Best of Italy tour. I wore the belt w/ the passports and credit card on traveling days. Since you will be with an obvious tour group most of the time, you probably won't be a target for crime. I was never approached by anyone nor did I have my pocket picked. If you venture out on a subway, be careful.

Funny, I did not smell anyone stinky. Perhaps it was because I was so often surrounded by other Americans on their bus tours! If it's cold, you will be able to wear outter wear more than once (if you don't spill gellato on it). . Dark clothes go a long way - especially with accessories you can buy along the way!

Packing and other tips

I have taken the Italy at Leisure and have done time as an independent traveler in Italy and several othe Euopean countries. I have always found that as far as walking in and around major cities I have always felt safer in Europe. Just like any unfamiliar city, just stay aware of where you are. You should like Italy in November temperatures will be cool great for walking. Italy as in most of Europe dress more formal than do Americans. For a man slacks or dockers, jacket or sweater for the cooler weather. Actually that goes for women also. Jeans are ok to, but you will stand out less, screaming that you are an American tourist if you leave off the white tennis shoes. Generally not seen on Europeans.

If you have not yet made air accomidations and if you have the extra few days go to Rome a couple of day early if flying into there. Or stay a couple of extra days if flying out of there. You will be glad you did. For my style of travel one more day in Venice and one more day in Tuscany would have also been nice.

Have a great trip, Italy is spectacular.

While the tour is ok I like to travel independently and I felt the time the tour spends in Rome is at least 2 days to short.
