We just came back from the best of italy/france trip. It was first rate; very well run and a ball. A lot depends on the people and the guide(s)-our trip guide was Hans who was superb, local guides were also outstanding, the group was a wide range in age from 30's to 60's all pretty congenial.
If you can afford it, take advantage of the optional trips, they are pricier than on your own but make life a lot easier. the best trips are tuscan hills in firenza, murano in venice and gondola rides. the only downers were the so called included dinners which were"low bid meals", but eatable. Food everywhere is great so if you want to eat on your own just use price as your guide. get your euros at ATM's never use a credit card at ATM,s unless you dont have a bank/debit card-make sure you have a 4 # pin. get a phone card for $5 in Italy(200 min). . pay your optional trips by credit card and keep your cash on hand to a min + guide/driver tips. bathrooms were never a problem, but keep a few euros (20 to 50 cents) on hand.
Have a great time.
