Travel Requirements - Minor who is traveling with parents

My wife and I are traveling to Cancun with our 3 year old son. We both have passports and are his natural parents. We plan on taking his original birth certificate with us as well but have not found anywhere whether or not he needs a photo ID. Of course to get a photo ID all you need is the parents and his birth certificate so I would tend to think needing a photo ID for him would be redundant.

Any advice from experienced travelors would be appreciated. Getting him a passport this late is quite costly and in my opinion probably not required but I wanted to run it by others as well.

Thanks

I have seen many people bring children with only birth certificates. The parents will need proper id with birth certificates. if you want an id get a state issued id for a few bucks. your travel agent should be able to confirm this information. have fun
