Italy in August

Italy in August

Postby DNA » Tue May 10, 2005 6:11 pm

We are considering the Italy's Great Cities tour in August. I've heard from a few people that many places close down in August, is that true? Also, will the weather be totally unbearable? This is our first trip ever to Europe and unfortunately, August is the only time we can go. I'd appreciate any comments or advice.

   It will be dreadfully hot in AUgus/, and extemely crowed, as that is when the locals take their vacation.
The best time is to go in May or September, I guess if that is the only time you can go, there is not much you can do, but it will be hot

We've traveled in Italy in August several times; for a few years, it was the only time we could go. In Rome, it was hot - probably in the 90s. In the north - Venice and the lakes - it was perfectly pleasant. When it was hot, we just adjusted our activities a little and planned plenty of gelato and drink breaks. All of the major tourist sites will be open as usual. Some restaurants may be closed in August, but in the major cities you will have plenty of available dining options. IMHO - Italy in August is better than no Italy at all!

Hot.. ..very hot. We live in Switzerland and go home to the U.S. for a month in August because all of the Europeans are on holiday that month, everything is packed here and schedules get goofy. True, Italy in Aug. is better than none at all, but I prefer late Sept. /early Oct. Have fun and stay cool!
