Nepal's Current Situation

The news report says spring tourist season in Nepal is down. That is true. Hotel, travel and trekking agencies are laying off their staffs and cutting down employees. That is also true. Only booming business is real estate and manpower agency to gulf. This has been the trend since couple of years.

The unfriendly reaction of UK, United States and India in the name of human right and democracy against the step taken by the king caused further downturn in the arrival of visitors to Nepal. It further eroded the confidence building measures taken by Nepal Tourism Board and private tourism entrepreneurs to halt the downward swirl.

Again the disruption of traffic by the Maoist since April 2 on the main highway to Kathmandu caused much concern in the sensitive prone sector like tourism. It is rumored to last until 12 April. The security forces are trying their best to ease the stressful overland journey to and from kathmandu by providing escort service to the buses and trucks plying the road.

Despite the negative news decimated by the media and Foreign Affairs Ministry’s of the major tourist originating countries the number of climbers who are vying to attempt the summit of Mt. Everest from south col. route has increased to 22 expedition teams. It is one of the highest numbers recorded in such a dire situation. Though there is a forecast of further decrease of tourist arrival in the beginning of April major tourist places has seen influx of tourist. This has given relief for those who live on tourism.
