Lucerne with Mount Pilatus Optional

Lucerne with Mount Pilatus Optional

Postby Terry M » Mon Feb 21, 2005 12:37 am

We did this optional this past June while on the Globus Thames to the Tiber tour. Mt. Pilatus was spectacular and the view from the top was breath taking. I would heartily encourage you to take this optional and enjoy the spectacular scenery. In the past, if you visited Mt. Pilatus with a Globus Tour group, you receive a free souvenir baseball cap with the Mt. Pilatus logo. :D

When we were there, we were going to try to do this independently. We found it was easier said than done. It was one of the few things that we wanted to do on our own that we didn't do. (That said, we did enjoy the things we did in lieu of this.)

Terry - We took the same tour in June - ours started June 18th I think. Were we on the same one or was yours earlier? I would recognize everyone on our tour but am not sure of everyone's names.

HI, How much did that tour cost? (The cog rail to the top of the mt. at Lucerne). . My granddaughter & i are taking this tour in June. We are both getting nervous about it as neither of us has been to Europe. She is 22 & i am 66. thanks.

First time tour jitters

I don't remember the cost, we took it as an optional item on the tour. It was fun.

I'm 66 and enjoyed the whole tour. I'm sure you will too. Be sure to allow yourself some sit down and watch the people time so you don't get worn out.

The tour directors take VERY good care of you.

Hi here is what is listed on the Globus site
LUCERNE
MOUNT PILATUS
A spectacular panoramic view over Central Switzerland from 7,000 feet up, via the world's steepest railway (inclination 48 degrees) as well as the silent aerial tramway and panoramic gondolas.
USD 51.00

Hope this helps

I think that you will have no problem going there individual. I was from Lucerne to Pilatus alone, three years ago, in a summer when I was in Swiss in a bussines trip. I do not remember any difficulty to go there. The view is spectacular. The cablecar ride is nice. Even if you have been in the past with the cablecar in many other mountains, you will be glad to go to Pilatus. It has a unique shape, inside is like a round tunnel with many windows.
You will spend there a memorable morning or afternoon.

Enjoy!

I am an American currently living in Switzerland about 1 hour outside of Kriens (the suburb of Lucerne) where you catch the cable car up to Pilatus.
We have taken the trip up several times both on the cable cars and by the train (plus the boat). . If the optional tour from Globus that includes both the cable cars and the train is $51 USD, it is a steal! (Plus, a Pilatus baseball cap would run you another 20 Francs) Do it! Just the cable car up runs about $45. The train does not run all year - only mid-May (sometimes later depending on snow) through October. The only problem I can foresee is that often it is cloudy and then the view is not that great, but you definitely should go. If you are going in the summer, take a ride on the summer toboggan run at the second cable station. It is alot of fun and runs about 6 Swiss Francs ($5 USD) Lunch on the sundeck is nice. Try the sausage soup. The weather is "iffy" all year round here, so you never know. For the poster who is nervous about visiting Europe for the first time - don't worry, you will have a great time. I am a big fan of Globus and of their optional tours (I recently took a guided tour with my Mother). . I look at it this way, the optionals save you time, you are guided and utlimately learn more and I think in the long run it does save you money.

you can quite easily do pilatus on your own for approximatly the same amount of money, but it will take you at a minimum 2 hours longer, and lucerne is a great little city with a lot of things to do. the mountain weather can also be hit or miss, but the ride to the top and back is quite incredible. rule of thumb for me when on tour, time is money and my time is precious!!

Definitely use the tour.
Loked into doing it on your own Can do with a boat ride trip (grand tour Ticket) but transportation headaches not worht it. Did it also in early June Thames to Tiber. Should see if you can get enough time between the cable car ride to do the luge run on your own.

A Fantastic optional so don't miss it. However it would be hard to do it on your own as you usually don't get long in each location. The cog wheel and the chairlift are in the middle of nowhere really and it would take you ages to get there to do it yourself. If you tried to do it you would not get any time to see Lucerne and this beautiful city is well worth seeing too!
