With all due respects to those that think Air Jamaica is or ever was a good airline: My wife and I flew Air Jamaica last December from Newark to Curacao. The flight departed late and in spite of promises that our Jamaica to Curacao connection would be held, it left 10 minutes before we arrived. Since there was no later flight to Curacao and no flights the next day either, they returned us to Miami, put us up overnight and flew us to Curacao from there the next day on American. We lost a day of our vacation and the first day's deposit on our room in Curacao.
On our return, they lost our reservations and we went through a rather lengthy "discussion" with their agent and terminal manager in Curacao. Our persistance resulted in the issuance of new tickets and we just made our flights back. Let me add that the Curacao to Jamaica leg left almost an hour late because "the air traffic controllers on Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire had to coordinate all of the flights in the area" (honest, that's what the pilot told us). . I guess pelican and flying fish traffic was extra heavy that day.
On our return I found that the Jamaican government had placed the airline in receivership and taken it over. Three months later, our frequent flyer miles, which were to be credited to our Delta accounts, had still not been awarded. An appeal to Delta rectified that.
All in all, we were not out of pocket that much money, but our vacation got off to a very miserable start and it ended with a bit of stress. If not for our steadfast persistence that Air Jamaica owed us for its screwups and had to make good, it would have cost us significantly more money to finally get to our vacation site. Our take is that we don't need that kind of grief, especially from an airline for which there are alternatives. We therefore will never fly Air Jamaica again under any circumstances.
