I was a long time customer of Budget Rent A Car.
In the summer of 2004, I rented a car from Budget. I was quoted a price for a two-week rental by the clerk at the location I rented the car from.
Just before the two weeks were up, I called and told the clerk at the office I rented the car from that I would like to extend the rental another week. The clerk said "no problem" and never mentioned anything about increased rates.
Just before that rental period was up, I phoned again, requesting to extend the rental period once more, bringing it to a full four weeks, or one month rental. Again, the same clerk never mentioned a thing about increased rates.
At the end of the rental period, I returned the vehicle to a different location, out of state from where I originally rented the car.
The clerk at the counter told me the fee. The amount they wanted was more than TEN TIMES the original rental agreement amount!
I asked the clerk not to charge my card for the amount he wanted. He refused and said he was going to charge it anyway, even after my asking him not to. I asked about alternate payment methods, but he just ignored me. I then asked him to itemize the charges. After I asked him this, he threatened to have me physically removed from their location by the authorities.
I left and realized they hadn't given me back the carbon of my rental agreement. I went back and mentioned this to them, but they said they "could not find" the rental agreement I had given to them, no more than 15 minutes previously.
In addition, the interior of the car they rented me flooded when it rained, causing damage to some of my property.
To make a long story shorter, they never responded to a letter I wrote their CEO. This was sent certified mail, return receipt requested. I know they received it, they just ignored it. They fought my bank, my credit card company, and me for months, to hold onto the money they had debited from my account. My bank and credit card company eventually sided with me. Even after my bank and credit card company's decision in my favor, they continued to bill me for two more months, before I finally contacted their parent company, Cendant Corporation, and threatened legal action.
They backed down after that.
