Tour or not to Tour???

Tour or not to Tour???

Postby lisa-Maree » Sat Nov 20, 2004 4:53 pm

Female Aussie looking at seeing a little bit of this wonderful world we live in. 31 years and have had many friends that have travelled with no time limitations, but none that have had time limitations (like me). . I have never been O/s myself and I are looking at doing a 11 week trip. Have checked out Trafalgar "Ultimate" Europe break, seems thorough enough, but is it alot of money for a very long bus ride??? I really want to get the most out of this experience, would doing a couple of shorter trips be viable? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To Tour or not to tour? - Not to tour

Lisa-maree-

In my humble opinion, 11 weeks is quite a bit of time to spend on a bus. I have travelled through Europe, both on tours and on my own. In my opinion, travelling on my own was far more superior. The trouble with tours, is that you can only see what the tour guide thinks you should see, and your time is managed by the tour company. This means that if you are really enjoying yourself, but the tour is leaving, you must leave too. On the flip side, if you are miserable in a location, but the tour is staying for a few more hours or a few more days, again you must do as the tour does.

Furthermore, 11 weeks is quite a nice holiday in Europe! I would recommend selecting a few places to visit and enjoying them on your own. The one case where I think tours are extraordinarily handy is for specific sites. For example, if you really want to go the the Uffizi in Florence, a tour will get you in without the long lines and help guide and inform you.

This is all a long way of saying.. .. .. . If I were you, I would plan the trip on my own, with day tours to highlight particular sites.

I hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your reply Michelle!

I have been busy planning, looking.. ..looking for HOURS over the internet in the past week or so and have decided that 32 days on a bus will drive me mad.

I am trying to create plan with a nice mix of both. So far have picked a "Wild in Scotland Tour" backpacker tour which will take me through England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland in 12 days.

Then fly to Greece from London. At the moment working out the best plan for my 10-15 days there.

Then fly from Greece to Italy. Have a couple of days on my own (do a Tour of the South of some description), then Join a Trafalgar Tour from Rome back to London. Takes me through northern Italy, Florence, Venice, then Lucerne & Paris.

Then fly from London to Thailand where I join my Aussie Girlfriend and do a 9 day Tour with her before I am homeward bound.

If you have any suggestions, ideas etc that you can share I would love it!!

Thanks again

Cheers
Lisa :)
