Which is the best Sandals resort?

Which is the best Sandals resort?

Postby rhino » Fri Oct 22, 2004 11:31 am

I am sure this is a common question and everyone has their own
opinon but I would like some input. Three months ago we stayed in Cozumel at the Elcozumeleno and loved it just thinking of trying something new for our honeymoon. It seems everyone is down on sandals is it just a bad place or what, thanks for any info

Like Allen said, it depends on how laid back you want to be or how active. You'll find many comments on SRC, SN, SMB and a few others. I was only in Cozumel once and that was on a cruise ship. This island is full of wonderful people. Unfortunately, they had a number of hurricanes that caused some damage to just some of the hotels and the guests who were there are having a hard time getting any responses for the hurricane guarantee. Some people have had an unhappy experience from the start. That's when Mangagements comes into play. You go directly to the top and complain. Spoke to Randy, SSG in Miami, lots of paper work for hurricane guarantees and etc.

Ok, enough of the sad stuff. We've never had a bad time in the last five years. But, I can only speak for SMB. This is one of the oldest hotels and close to many tours and airport. Some guests don't like the noise, but you get use to it. It has the largest white beach. You can do it all or nothing at all. Check out the websites and there will probably other guests that will give their info on the other Sandals.

Iv'e been to them all (in Jamaica) and I have to say Negril. Its long and shallow layout means verything is on the beach. One big plus is you are right next to Hedonism 2 and you are allowed to walk the nude beach there as long as your wifes ok with it (or doesn't know). . Wallking the other way you will find Sandals Inn (a dump) and Beaches which both you have full privelages for food and drink. Also the crowd seemed younger (20-40) and more fun and less up tight. Dr. Perfect, if you only knew half as much as you think you do after going to one Sandals resort, you would know that Beaches Sandy Bay was formerly Beaches Inn. I misspoke when I said Sandals Inn,sorry but I'm not "perfect". . Now you can get back to watching cartoons and playing video games.

first of all, there's nothing wrong with cartoons and video games. get real man.

secondly, yeah yeah, i knew it used to be the Beaches Inn, but it hasn't been that in years and it's not a Sandals, either. that's why i interpreted your post like that. you're original post said "the Sandals Inn and Beaches." sounds like to me, if i translate, "Sandals Inn and the Beaches properties Negril and Sandy Bay" was what you meant. i wasn't really making fun of you or correcting you nearly as much as i was just havin fun with the typo. obviously i was wrong, my apologies. i could have made the same post on cheryl's board and everyone would have gone "oh, that's right dp. my bad. yeah Sandy Bay.. ..yuck yuck." guess that's why this board has gone the way it has recently. cuz all people wanna do over here anymore is argue. granted, i'm involved in a lot of that. but geez people. lighten up. in the meantime, get up with the times Jack and use the terminology so we know what you're talking about or else don't bash the rest of us for not understandin you. nobody cares what it used to be called. you still callin SRC the Royal Jamaican?

Well, if the kids are done playing (although.. .. . I loved the whole cow story.. .. .. .) I will try and get this thread back on track.

SDR is probably my favorite of the Jamaica Sandals. It is a little bit older, and the elevators are a bit scary, but for sheer sake of convenience to off site excursions, I enjoy it the most.

SMB. I think this is about the oldest of the sandals, and when I was single, rather enjoyed it. Friends who have gone since do not have a lot of good to say about the town, but if you are going to stay on the resort (I tend to go trotting all over when I travel.) then it is no big deal. Noise is an issue there however. I am a pretty laid back person, and can deal with most anything, but my wife likes to bellyache, and SMB was most definitely not for her. For one thing, the planes look like they are going to land on the beach. This resort is very close to the airport.

That closeness brings an advantage however. Where many people will waste up to 6 hours going to and from the resort (we take TimAir everywhere on the island.. .. . cannot say enough good things about those people.), folks staying at SMB will be at the resort in a matter of minutes.

As far as the children included resorts, I have nothing good to say about those. The thought of children while I am on vacation is horrifying, so we tend to avoid those like the plague.

Bottom line, my suggestion is to try them all (except the brat filled ones) and find your own favorite!

pahobbit, thanks for getting this thread back on track, again. Hope it lasts for awhile. You are right about smb, it can be noisy with the planes, but my husband and I don't mind it a bit. It's a custom to wave to the planes when they are flying above. Like you said it's about 5-10 min. and you're there and if you know the locals there is wonderful shopping close by. Guests just need to ask some of the ssg people, if they don't want to use the tours, who they recommend for drivers at different resorts. We have three that we highly recommend to guests at smb.

Call it dumb luck but I've been bussed to Negril twice and Ocho 4 times in the last 4 years by both Sandals and Superclubs and not once did we stop for a bathroom/shopping/redstripe break. A couple of times the driver offered if anyone needed to stop and the concensus was no so we continued on. The longest Ocho trip was 2 1/2 hours. Last year we made it in just over 2 hours. They are making progress on the road every year.

I cannot stress using TimAir enough for those that hate the bus trip. They are a little airline on the island, relatively inexpensive and go to a nuimber of locations. The Negril trip is only like 20 min. Boscobel Bay (Ocho Rios) is a bit longer, but still is only like 30 min.

Best of all, you typically get your own plane.

Everyone thanks for all the info it is greatly appreciated. I am curious to know how much TImair costs? Is it worth it taking the bus trip to get to see the island or is there not much to see? Thanks again

Boscobel bay is pricey. Right around $550 round trip for the charter.

Here is the link to their web rate page though.

http://www.timair.com/rates.htm

As far as going to Negril, they are really about your only option. Air Jamaica no longer offers shuttles to Negril.
