I was just wondering when your are in Europe, what if any ID should you have on you, besides passport of course, however how about when you need to show how old you are to get in to bars etc. Should you bring other id such as drivers license etc. Any and all answers will be good.

I never had to show any ID (except at the airports). . However we did not go to any bars. We were told that the casino in Lucerne required ID and I think it was your passport.

Interested in this as well. My DL recently expired and I probably won't have it updated till after my trip. Do I need to bring a DL with me or is a passport enough? Will an expired DL be ok?

Your passport should be all the id you will need. It displays your date of birth and photo, so should be more than sufficient. In theory you are supposed to have your passport on you at all times anyway, so probably no point in carrying additional id.

It's a good idea to make a copy of your passport. Then if it is lost or stolen, it will be easier to get it replaced. I certainly would take another form of picture ID - just in case- but we never actually needed one.

Your passport covers everything. (It even takes the place of almost all IDs in the United States, like a social security card or birth certificate.)
If you want to rent a car, of course, you will still need a valid driver's license. But most bars actually prefer a passport to trying to decipher a Kansas driver's license or something - if they even ask for ID at all. In most places the drinking age is lower than 21, so if you look anywhere near 21, you're good to go.

We will be flying United out of O'Hare in Chicago and after talking with them they said I WILL need my DL at the airport to check in for the flight. And they say if it's expired that you need to have it renewed, expired licenses will not be accepted.

So i'm going to get mine renewed today and i'll take it with me. Just one more thing to possibly lose. :)

Sorry but they misinformed you about the MUST HAVE a Drivers Liscense to check in at the airport. That would be Imposible since MANY people do not even have a drivers liscense to begin with (some because they dont want to drive or it has been taken away or hundreds of other reasons), so what does the airlines do then.. ..I guarantee they dont say you cannot fly if you dont drive! ALL you really need is a US Passport (thats the LAW) but it is a wise Idea to have an additional form of Picture ID with you just to be safe (and better prepared) also some though Not Required carry a photocopy of their Birth certificate along with them "Just in case". . Dont worry as long as you have a Current US Passport you will be fine!

Yeah, that didn't make sense to me either. Going to give them a call tomorrow and see what they have to say about it. Seem's very weird they'd tell me that.

Either case, i'll take it with me. Hate to need it and not have it.
