We have taken the cruise to Hawaii, 4 times, each time Ensenada to Hawaii. The trip to Ensenada is not pleasant, but better to get it over with at the beginning of your trip and not have it be the last memory. We have heard horror stories also about the border crossing from Ensenada, long lines, changing busses, etc, many have missed flights in San Diego, but the trip from San Diego to Ensenada is tolerable and then it is over.
You are able to do most sightseeing on your own in all of the islands. At each port there are complimentary buses and shuttles, Hilo $1.00 pp for public bus that takes you so many places, free shuttle to Rainbow Falls, and then it is easy to get a rental car. All car rents have shuttles at each port, making it easy to get your car and tour on your own. Most cost effecive if there is more than 2 of you. On Maui there is a free shuttle up to Kaanapali area where you can go to the beach, shop, or walk the exclusive beach boardwalk and enjoy all of hotel row. In Kauai, there are compl shuttles to the beach and shopping and Coconut Plantation, where you can get on a city bus to north shore. In Honolulu, the city bus and trolly system is quite efficient and cheap. But, if there is some excursion you really want to do, do it. Hope I have been some help to you.
