I'm booked on the Carnival Pride in August. Any suggestions about what to do while on shore leave? Is it best to stick with Carnival-sponsored excursions, or do you recommend striking out on one's own?

I'm taking the weather into consideration. Very hot and possibly wet is the prediction I have heard.
