When I went o Mexico I used my birth certificate. Although it has been a few years so I don't know if the rules changed or not.

make sure you have your original birth certificate, the one with the raised seal.. .. .. ..best is passport.. .. ..allow yourself time to apply for one, because you will need your original bieth cert. to get passport.. .. .. ..if you do not have original, you will need to apply for one.. ..this all takes time.. .. ..several months.. .. ..check with travel agent.. ..some areas you can check with post office.. .. .. .. .

We use this place (in DC) for work. You can also go through them if you have a rush order. They are able to walk passport apps directly through the Embassies in Washington (part of the fee) that's how they get them so fast.

I recommend following these Official U.S. Government guidelines, though:

Passport

I recently traveled to Jamacia from Usa and have heard in January everyone will need a passport. Even to Mexico. It would have made our travel alot easier. We used birth certicicates but had actually sent the origanial to the resort but did not realize until we tried to board. We had to but new airfaire to meet our deadline of our wedding. If we had passports tht would not have happened. Be sure you have the right proof of citizenship before you start for the airport. Be sure to check with someone who knows for sure not everyone is accurate at what they tell you .More than one person told us we had the right papers but we weree rejected. Neveth less our wedding was absoulutely the greatest. Care free and beautiful.
