Yes, I think April was the best time. It was cool enough to allow for comfortable walking and climbing up the hills. We had two days of very light rain that was no problem to us. Athens is not so busy because the residents leave for vacation the week before Easter. Athens does pretty well shut down on the morning of Good Friday.
The hotels were nice, clean and attractive, but not deluxe. The hotel in Athens is quite aways from the center of town, but you don't have much time on the schedule to see it on your own anyway.
The meals were all buffet style so you could pick and choose what you like. We soon learned what pleased our American taste buds the best. There are no dinners in Athens, but there are places all around the hotel including a Pizza Hut and a grocery store.
We would have liked more time in Athens to explore on our own. You may want to go in early. We flew from San Francisco, so it was a very long day of travel and we were still tired the next to start the tour. The last afternoon they offered to drop us off on the main shopping street, but we were too tired to walk that much.
There is a lot of climbing in Athens and Delphi. You may want to work out ahead of time to get in shape.
Our tour guide was a retired history teacher and she made the trip very rich in culture and history. The country side is not really beautiful, but the ancient cities are the main attraction anyway. You are bound to see a lot of fire scars left over from the fires this year.
I also suggest you become familiar with the maps of the general area of travel and the names of towns, etc. This will help you place everything in persective as you listen to the guide. Be sure to take notes as you take pictures so you can identify them all when you get home.
Enjoy the trip, we certainly did. Tom
