I was in Italy in January last year and as I recall it was very, very cold. I went all around Europe including places like Russia, Poland, Hungary, Austria where you couldnt step outside without your thick, warm coat and hat, gloves and scarf but when I got to Italy I could go out with just a coat on but didnt need the rest of the survival gear. I'm pretty sure you'll need a good, warm jacket but the best thing to do is to actually take lots of thinner things, like lots of thin tops and thermals (not sure what you call the where you live). . This way, your suitcase wont be too heavy and dressing like that is good for when you go into places like museums where you can just take of a couple of layers off and still be warm but not too hot and so on, as you'll be constantly going in and of hot/cold places and you'll be able to regulate your temperature.

But yes, the short answer to your question is - it will be cold!
I will be visiting Italy this next February and was wondering what the weather is like around that time. Is it coats and jacket weather or warm enough for short sleeves in the middle of the day? I will not have much room to pack bulky coats and would like to bring as little as needed. How cold does it get at night?
