Has anyone been to Italy in January?

Has anyone been to Italy in January?

Postby guest Jacki » Thu Jun 23, 2005 6:30 pm

My husband and I are going to Italy the first two weeks in January. We are taking the Italian Mosaic tour and would like any information regarding what it is like in the winter in Italy..other than it will be colder.

Also, what was liked on this tour and not liked?

Thanks,

Jacqueline

Italy in January

I made the mistake of visiting Italy in January. The canals of Venice were filled with ice, the fountains of Rome were frozen and Pompii was burried in snow. It was so cold at the coliseum in Rome that 1/2 of use didn't leave the bus for the tour. Don't believe the weatherman about average January temperatures, it was the worst tour of my life

Cold in Italy

It sounds like Mort was very unlucky. My wife and I have been to Italy in January and yes it was cold but apart from the Mountains and Florence (very light snow)there was no snow in the northern cities (Venice) or the central cities of Roma, Pompei, etc,. . It was good because there are no crowds and the heat can be terrible in mid-summer Italy.

Thank you both for your replies. I am hoping the latter reply is what we see when we visit in January. I do not like to be hot nor do I like crowds. Plus we like the fact its cheaper this time, not to mention this is for our third year anniversary 12/21.

Thanks again,

Jacqueline

Italy in January

I traveled to Italy 4 years ago, both in Jan. and August. I thought January was the perfect time to go. I knew it would be cool, so I brought the appropriate clothes. August was awful.. ..lextremely hot (especially in Naples and Pompeii), long lines and crowds everywhere.
